1) Application procedure in Germany
As a rule, the application process begins in your home country. A national visa is usually required for entry to study. This must be applied for at the responsible German mission abroad. Because of the war in Ukraine, the application process can start directly from Germany, but note that you have to finance yourself in the period up to and after the residence permit is issued.
a) Contacting the local immigration authorities / submitting the application for a residence permit (personal appearance required)
- Submission of the completed application form (which can be downloaded from the website of the embassy or the immigration authorities) Proof of German language skills (for example: language certificate, German school, training or university certificates, proof of successful participation in the integration course, confirmation from the training company of sufficient language skills for the desired vocational training, confirmation of registration for a job-related German language course) Certificate of enrollment at a university Certificates of previous training (diplomas) in the original language and a German translation that was created by a publicly appointed and sworn translator 3 biometric passport photos Social security card Proof of health insurance Health insurance can be taken out with the German statutory health insurance company or with a private health insurance company Proof of accommodation (rental or purchase contract) Proof of financial means (training or employment contract, declaration of commitment)
The initial issue of a residence permit for students costs up to EUR 100.
Note: The documents and information must always be submitted in German. In individual cases, the immigration authorities may require fewer or more pieces of evidence.
b) Contacting the residents' registration office/city office (registration certificate) by submitting the following documents:
- Identity card, passport, certificate from a landlord about accommodation
2) Issuance of the residence permit
After the application has been submitted to the immigration authorities, the residence permit is usually issued within 6-8 weeks. After the application process is completed, an electronic residence card will be issued within 4 weeks. However, you have the right to reside in Germany immediately after submitting your application.
